Here’s an intro to apples and the nutrients they contain.
What are apples?
Apples are an edible and sweet fruit that are produced from apple trees.
Each spring apple trees bloom or set on blossoms. Inside the bottom of each blossom is the ovule. Inside that ovule are seeds that will grow into an apple.
The blossom is pollinated by bees so. The seeds can be fertilized and then the blossom turns brown and falls to the ground. Then the apples begin to grow.
They are cultivated worldwide and have been grown for thousands of years in rope and Asia.
The apple tree was brought to North America by European colonialists.

It takes about 36 apples to make 1 gallon of apple cider.
If we are looking at ‘can cats eat apples?’ lets at what apples contain?

As you can see apples contain a huge amount of water, a hint of salt, a little phosphorus, quite a bit of acidic content, and quite a lot of sugar.
This doesn’t mean a lot if they only eat a little apple, say a few slices.
But if they eat a lot of apple then, the high water, sugar and to a lesser extent, acidic content, means that it could have ill effects on a cat.
If a cat were to eat a whole apple then you could have a cat with an upset stomach because apple just has too much sugar and acidic content for them.
Can cats eat apples?
Yes, they can eat apples. But they are not the easiest food for them to digest.
Because of they are meat eaters fruit isn’t the first food that they would look to eat.
The taste may not be fully to their liking. But it doesn’t mean that they can’t try it. Some cats may even enjoy them.
Apples are great fruit for us to enjoy. Their nutrients and vitamin content is brilliant for humans to eat. But they are not as good for cats to consume.
So if you decide to feed your cat an apple, then make sure it is prepared well and fed in small amounts to them.
How to prepare apple for your cat
Make sure it is washed thoroughly so that any pesticides or chemicals are washed off which could potentially be harmful. To your cat
Make sure any that it is cut up into slices or small pieces.
Make sure that the core and the seeds are stripped away.
The smaller the pieces, the easier and more manageable it will be for your cat to eat them.
How much apple should be fed to a cat?
Don’t feed them too much apple in one go.
Three or four slices or pieces should be more than sufficient for them to eat. If they eat too much apple, it could upset their stomach.
It is not a food to be fed on a daily basis to your cat as part of their daily diet. It is more like a treat for them to have to give variety to their diet.
There are many other treats you can also give your cat and apples are simply just one treat you can give to them.
If your feed three or four slices or pieces once a week, that should be enough for them.
Once they have eaten them apple for the first time then do monitor your cat to ensure that there are no side effects of eating it.
Some cats may not like it as much and it may even adversely affect your cat. If you find that they have an upset stomach or are sick then don’t feed it to them again.
If these symptoms persist then it would be wise to seek veterinary assistance.
Other ways to feed apple to your cat
Another way for them to eat it is to mash it up for them or to puree it. A purée is cooked food, that has been ground, pressed, blended or sieved to the consistency of a creamy paste or liquid.
Another term for apple puree is applesauce. Just make sure that no sugar is added to it.
It would make a nice addition to their diet, however, it should be a supplement to what they usually eat and not a replacement.
Unlike a food like chocolate, which we looked at in the last post, Apple is a nice treat for them to eat but doesn’t give them the nutritional goodness that they need for their diet.
Their main diet should consist of healthy cat food and dry cat food which will give them the nutrients that they need for their diet.
If you are uncertain that your cat is getting the best from their current dietary plan, do seek out a veterinarian for a more tailored plan for your cat.
Can cats eat apple seeds?
Apple seeds are found at the center of an apple and contain what is required to grow a new apple.
They are not usually eaten by humans and are normally cast away along with the core.
Apple seeds contain many different nutrients and compounds to enable them to develop into an apple.
One such plant compound is amygdalin which is a plant compound.
Amygdalin is found in large amounts in the seeds of fruits of the rose family. Fruits such as cherries, peaches, apricots, almonds, and not to miss out apples, contain amygdalin in its seeds.
It is very much part of the chemical defenses of the seeds. When the seed is solid and intact, it is harmless to humans and animals.
But if it is damaged, digested, chewed, or simply cut up amygdalin morphs into hydrogen cyanide.
This is very poisonous to both humans and animals and if consumed in high doses is lethal.
The way it works is that it interferes with the oxygen supplies of cells
Cyanide is known as an effective poison that has been used for centuries and a high dose can lead to death in a short amount of time.
This means that apple seeds are potentially very dangerous for cats to eat as they won’t understand that they are not supposed to chew apple seeds.
In this instance, they should be kept away from a cat so there is no risk of them being chewed.
They could potentially kill your cat if they were to chew them.
Can cats eat apple cores?
The apple core is the tough central part of the apple which basically is where the apple is formed around.
It contains the seeds of the apple as well and will be the foundation of the stem which will extrude from the top of the apple.
No, they can’t eat apple cores at all unfortunately. It is not a good part of the apple for them to eat and should be stripped away when feeding the apple to your cat.

Apple juice is a type of fruit juice which is made from the pressing of apples which are also macerated.
It is normally produced commercially and sold in grocery stores and supermarkets around the world. In fact, it is one of the most common types of fruit juices in the world.
They can’t drink apple juice, unfortunately. It is just too concentrated for them and will hurt their stomach if they drink it. Also if it has sugar in it, it will harm them.
So, apple juice is a drink to avoid giving to them. Instead, feed then watered down milk or water.
