Strawberries are one of my favorite fruits and I’m sure I’m not alone in saying they are one of the tastiest of fruits available.
We absolutely love them in our family and my daughter could eat them all day, well until she got a tummy ache.
They are sweet fruits full of flavor and are used in many different culinary situations around the world, including desserts, main meals, and starters not to mention many kinds of drinks available.
So this post is all about strawberries and strawberry flavored foods and drinks and whether cats can possibly eat or drink them.

What are strawberries?
Strawberries are a species of the genus Fragaria and cultivated around the world.
They are widely lived for its texture, bright red coloring, sweetness, and smell.
They are eaten in large quantities and served in many different culinary dishes such as pies, preserves, ice cream, chocolates, yogurts and drinks such as milkshakes, liqueurs, teas and juices.
Because of their taste and aroma, they are also used widely in many different products such as perfume, sanitizers, lip gloss and toilet cleaners.
Despite their name, strawberries are not berries as such.
Instead they an accessory fruit.
This means that the flesh of the strawberry does not come from the ovaries of the plant but instead, they come from the receptacles that hold the plant.
Strawberries have seeds on the outside of the fruit and each one is an ovary of the flower with a seed inside it.
They have on average about 800 seeds on the outside of each fruit.
Strawberries differ as fruits in flavor, color, shape, and size.
They also differ in terms of their fertility, season or ripening and liability to fall to disease.
When they are commercially produced the plants are propagated runners and, in general, distributed as either bare root plants or plugs.
Today strawberries are cultivated in many different countries around the world.
The United States is the world’s largest producer of strawberries.
The next highest producing countries are Turkey, Spain, Egypt, Korea, Mexico, and Poland.
In the US most commercial strawberries in the U.S. are grown in California or Florida, where with the help of new varieties the strawberry growing season runs from January through November.
The peak season for strawberries is April through June.
So can cats eat strawberries?

As you can see strawberries contain a huge amount of water, a little phosphorus and calcium and quite a bit of acidic content and sugar plus a lot of carbohydrates.
These amounts are helpful in checking whether they are a fruit that cats cat eat a lot of or should just be fed small amounts of or even nothing at all.
It’s always helpful to look at what a food actually contains so we can make an informed decision about it.
Can cats eat strawberries?
From what we see above, cats eat a small number of strawberries, but the sugar, phosphorus and acidic content not to mention the large amount of water and carbohydrates that they contain mean that they can’t eat too much of them.
Just like if we as humans eat too many of them, we get stomach problems, cats will too.
So limiting them to one or two strawberries per serving is a good way to go about giving them to them.
You can serve them whole.or you can slice them up and put them in their bowl.
Make sure they are washed thoroughly before serving though.
The problem with strawberries for cats
The issue with strawberries though is that they don’t give the cat any nutritional benefit in their diet.
They need protein and so strawberries offer nothing to them that regard.
As far as strawberries are concerned they could be considered a junk food for your cat and there is nothing in of sustenance for them.
They will enjoy them as a nice snack but they shouldn’t be considered part of their main diet.
Can kittens eat strawberries?
It is unwise to feed strawberries to kittens until they are at least 20 weeks old.
Their bodies are not strong enough to deal with the amount of sugar that strawberries contain and they will have an ill effect in them.
If they happen to nibble on one, do monitor them for any after effects.
If you see anything detrimental then take to you veterinary surgeon for further checks.
Can pregnant cats eat strawberries?
When cats get pregnant they need greater amounts of protein and calories than the average cat.
This means taking greater care over what you feed them and ensuring that they get the energy foods that they need to sustain them during pregnancy.
This means that strawberries are not the greatest food to feed pregnant cats.
They offer on health benefits to pregnant cats and wont give them the nutrients that they require. If they happen to nibble one they will be fine.
But pregnant cats should be switcher to eating kitten food which will give them the energy that they need much more than normal cat food.
Both wet and dry kitten food is good for them in this instance.
It can be purchased from any good pet store, grocery store or supermarket.
Can cats eat strawberry leaves?
Strawberry leaves are found on the strawberry plants on which strawberry fruits grow. Some animals choose to eat them such as field mice.
Strawberry stems are fine for cats to eat but strawberry leaves should be avoided as a food for cats.
Can cats eat strawberry yogurt?
Strawberry yogurt is a popular flavor of yogurt. It is produced by bacterial fermentation of milk.
The bacteria which is used to make yogurt if called yogurt cultures.
This bacteria ferments lactose which acts on milk protein so as to give yogurt its tart flavor and texture.
Yogurt is commonly made with cows milk but buffalo, goats, ewes, mares, camels, and yaks milk can also be used.
Strawberry yogurt can be purchased from all good supermarkets or grocery stores or can be home made.
It can be home made by mixing a beaten strawberry and sugar or strawberry jam with plain yogurt.

As you can see yogurt contains a huge amount of water, a lot of phosphorus, calcium, and acidic content, plus a little carbohydrates, sugar and fat.
This means that yogurt is not good for cats ta all to eat.
There is too much water, phosphorus and acidic content for them and it will make them sick or give them diarrhea if the eat it.
A food best to avoid feeding them.
Can cats eat strawberry jam?
Strawberry jam is a fruit preserve.
It is made from strawberries and sugar and is canned or sealed for the long term in storage.
It is made by chopping or mashing strawberries and boiling them with sugar and water.
When the mixture reaches a temperature of 104 °C (219 °F), the acid and the pectin in the fruit react with the sugar, and the jam will set on cooling.
Strawberry jam can either be home made or purchased in grocery stores or supermarkets.
It is a very popular variety of jam and often eaten at breakfast time as a spread on toast or at lunch time in sandwiches.
In the UK a popular use for it is on scones with clotted cream.
Strawberry jam is not good for cats to eat because of the amount of sugar that it contains.
It is far too sweet for them and will make them sick or give them diarrhea. It is definitely a food to avoid feeding you cat.
If they do manage to eat some then do monitor them for any ill effects in their health.
If things take a turn for the worse then do consider taking them to your veterinary surgeon.
Can cats eat strawberry cake?
Strawberry cake is a dessert cake which utilises cake as its main ingredient. It is often served chilled or partially frozen.
Often it is served as a valentines day dessert.
Strawberries can uses in the frosting, on top of the cake, or in the batter of the cake. Frozen or fresh strawberries are often used.
They are also utilised as a filling in between the layers if the cake. Sometimes strawberry flavored gelatin is used as well.
It can also be made as a gluten free cake as well.
Strawberry cake is not a great food for cats to eat and they may get sick of they eat a lot of it.
It has a lot of sugar in it which is not good for them at all.
If they happen to nibble some they will be fine, but its not a food to purposely feed a cat.
Can cats eat strawberry ice cream?
Strawberry ice cream is a variety of ice cream which is made with strawberry flavoring or fresh strawberries.
When it is made with fresh strawberries, they are crushed and blended with sugar, vanilla, cream and eggs to make the ice crea mixture.
It typically has a pink or a lighter red coloring. It is one of the most popular varieties of ice cream and one of the three flavours of neopolitain ice cream.
A variation of strawberry ice cream is strawberry ice cream which is basically vanilla ice cream with a ribbon of strawberry jam or syrup
Ice cream is generally too cold for cats to eat.
But they may choose to have an inquisitive lick of it as cats do.
If they eat a lot of it though they may get sick or diarrhea and as a result as it too much for their stomachs.
Can cats eat freeze dried strawberries?
Freeze dried strawberries are those that have undergone a dehydration process so as to remove the water from the fruit.
They are dried to one tenth of their original weight.
Even though the fruit has lost its water, it retains its color and shape whilst getting a more intense flavor as a result.
They have no added ingredients and so remain their natural sweetness and flavor.
They are usually eaten as a snack or as part of breakfast cereals in the morning.
They are sold in most grocery stores and supermarkets around the world.
Freeze dried strawberries are okay for cats to eat but just like fresh strawberries do it offer any nutritional benefit for cats at all.
If you want to feed them one or two there is no harm in it but it is not advisable to feed them to many as they are high in sugar.
Can cats eat strawberry laces?
Strawberry laces are candy strings of gelatin and sugar.
They are sold in sweet shops and grocery stores and are a popular sweet with children.
Their ingredients include Glucose-Fructose Syrup, Wheat Flour, Sugar, Dextrose, Palm Oil, Citric Acid, Concentrated Strawberry Juice, Concentrated Blackcurrant Juice, Flavouring, Fruit And Plant Extracts (Tomato, Apple, Pumpkin, Radish), Antioxidants (Tocopherol-Rich Extract, Ascorbic Acid), Glazing Agent (Beeswax)
Sweet foods such as confectionary are not good for cats at all.
They have no nutritional benefit for them and contain far too much sugar for them to consume.

Can cats eat strawberry milk?
Strawberry milk is a flavored milk.
It is a sweetened dairy drink which is made from artificial and natural flavourings, colourings, sugar, and milk.
It is often pasteurised making use of ultra high temperature treatment.
This means it can have a longer shelf life than pasteurised milk.
You can also get pregnant mixed flavored milk which is sold in the refrigerated section of grocery stores.
Strawberry milk is a type of milk that should be avoided for cats. It will make them sick.
Can Cats eat strawberry plants?
Strawberry plants are the plants.
In which strawberries are grown in.
They can purchased in seed form and grown as such in soil or purchased partially or fully grown from garden centres.
Strawberry plants are best ordered in late summer so that they can be planted in early autumn.
They are bought as cold-stored runners should be planted from late spring to early summer and will fruit 60 days after planting.
Strawberry plants are not good for cats to eat and should be avoided.
Can cats eat strawberry stems?
Strawberry stems are found on the top of strawberry fruits.
They are edible to humans but are generally taken off when eaten.
Cats can eat strawberry stems if they choose to do so.
However, they offer no nutritional benefit for cats just like strawberries but are fine for them to consume.
Can cats eat unripe strawberries?
Just like unripe strawberries give humans stomach ache if consumed, they will do the same for cats.
It is better to wait until they have ripened to feed strawberries to cats.
